by Wynette April 18, 2013 at 4:54 pmI have been trying to duplicate a recipe my Nanny always seemed to have on hand and just can’t quite seem to get right. Have you ever heard of Watermelon Preserves? She made it with watermelon rinds, sugar and lemon. I ate it on my toast for breakfast. It was so delicious! I have tried to make it a few times and just can’t get it right. Would love to find a great recipe for it! Any ideas?
Hi, Wynette! I have never made this myself, but I love watermelon pickles! Yours sounds sweeter and less sour than the ones I’m familiar with.
Is it more like a candy, a jam, or a pickle? I’d love to hear more about your Nanny’s preserves!
Here are two methods I found:
http://nchfp.uga.edu/how/can_07/watermelon_rind_preserves.html
and
http://easteuropeanfood.about.com/od/fruits/r/watermelonjam.htm
The difference is a saltwater bath to soften the rind.
